International Art at the Kalidria Hotel & Thalasso SPA

When it comes to stained glass, Brian Clarke is the world's most famous artist in this field. Since the early 1970s, he has worked alongside world-famous architects such as Norman Foster, Renzo Piano and Zaha Hadid. His works have been exhibited in prestigious international museums, such as the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag in The Hague, the Sezon Museum of Art in Tokyo, the Stadtmuseum in Munich, Germany, the Centre International du Vitrail in Chartres, France, and the Vitromusée in Romont, Switzerland.

Three works by this famous English artist can be admired in the Ethra Reserve: the stained glass window at the entrance of the Kalidria Hotel, the stained glass ceiling of the Kalidria Restaurant and the large wall of the Clarke Room, dedicated to him.

The Kalidria Hotel & Thalasso SPA is located in the heart of the rich Apulian territory, characterised by olive groves and vineyards, marvellous coastlines and villages with enchanting atmospheres, balanced between modernity and tradition. Among the places steeped in history and with an authentic Mediterranean flavour that can be visited from Kalidria are some of Puglia's must-see destinations, such as Alberobello, Ostuni, Polignano a Mare, Martina Franca, Locorotondo, Grottaglie, Laterza, Ginosa and Lecce.

The Kalidria Hotel & Thalasso SPA is also close to Matera, Capital of Culture 2019, and the archaeological site of Metaponto, where the polis of Magna Graecia is located.

 

In the heart of the
Nature Reserve in Stornara

The Kalidria Hotel & Thalasso SPA is located in the Stornara Nature Reserve, a protected area since 1997 that protects the coastal Mediterranean forest consisting mainly of Aleppo pines, which covers an area of 1,501 hectares along the Ionian coast. The name 'Stornara' comes from the numerous starlings ("storno") that migrate there every winter. Many bird species can be observed in the reserve and, among the water birds, there are Red Herons, Grey Herons, Woodcocks, Mallards, White Storks, Grebes and Wild Geese. Robins, blackcaps, cuckoos and red woodpeckers can be found in the woods. Common mammals such as hares, foxes, hedgehogs, porcupines and badgers can also be found in the reserve. Along the coastal landscape, although not near the sea, are many ancient coastal towers built during the Spanish viceroyalty to spot the landings of Saracen pirate ships.
